भूकम्प क्या होता है ? What is Earthquake?

About Earthquake

As per Geological science an earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves (also known as  a quake, tremor or temblor). The seismicity, seismism or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

How it Appear? कैसा होता है?

It may be observed at the Earth's surface; earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacement of the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides, and occasionally volcanic activity.

Calculation:    गणना ?

The Earthquakes are measured using observations from seismometers. The moment magnitude is the most common scale on which earthquakes larger than approximately 5 are reported for the entire globe. The more numerous earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5 reported by national seismological observatories are measured mostly on the local magnitude scale, also referred to as the Richter magnitude scale.

Causes:  कारण ?

The Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by other events such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests. An earthquake's point of initial rupture is called its focus or hypo center. The epicenter is the point at ground level directly above the hypo center.

Powerful Earthquake so far: अब तक का सर्वशक्तिशाली भूकम्प ?

The most recent large earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or larger was a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan in 2011 as of March 2014 and it was the largest Japanese earthquake since records began.

Effects of earthquakes:  भूकम्प से बर्बादी ? There are many effects as given below-

1. Shaking and ground rupture.

2. Landslides and avalanches.

3. Fires.

4. Soil liquefaction.

5. Tsunami.

6. Floods.

7. Human impacts.

Nepal Earthquake News-

Many fresh tremors were felt today (26-04-2015) at 12:39 Hrs in Nepal, and across north and east India, a day after a quake devastated the neighbouring country and affected parts of India. The aftershocks measured with a 6.7 in the Richter scale according to United States Geological Survey. The epicenter was Kodari, around 80 km away east of Kathmandu.

North India besides Delhi the tremors were also felt in Lucknow, Jaipur and many more places. In Bihar, where more than 50 people died in yesterday's earthquake, the tremors were pronounced and went on for several minutes in north India.

Delhi and Kolkata metro services were stopped temporarily to safe guard of any loss or damage.

On 25-04-2015 earthquake, which measured 7.9 on Richter scale, killed more than 2,200 people in Nepal and 62 people in India and led to widespread devastation around.

Under rescue operation thousands of people were displaced in Nepal, many roads developed huge cracks, old buildings were flattened. The aftershocks many in numbers remained mild, but panic-stricken people spent the night under the open sky without peace.

In the worst quake to hit the Himalayan country in 80 years also triggered a deadly avalanche that buried a part of the base camp for climbers bound for Mount Everest. 19 bodies have been recovered so far, 61 people have been injured and 5 others died below the base camp.
